What is Coercive Control?

Mar 3, 2025

Coercive control involves behaviours that allow someone to dominate a partner, ex-partner, or family member.

Examples include:

  • Constant criticism or humiliation
  • Extreme dominance and jealousy
  • Monitoring daily activities and controlling finances
  • Restricting freedom and isolating from family/friends
  • Threats of harm, including to pets or property
  • Using children to exert control
  • Manipulating information to professionals

These behaviours exploit insecurities, leaving victims frightened and eroding their confidence. Coercive control can continue even after a relationship ends, especially with economic abuse.

Need Help? If you or someone you know is experiencing this, please contact our Deaf Abuse Team. We will also be at the Let’s Celebrate Deaf Women’s Day event on 8th March 2025 to answer any questions and offer support.
