About Deaf-initely Women

Deaf-initely Women brings deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women together.

Isolation can be life changing and life limiting. Deaf-initely Women aims to empower deaf and hard of hearing women who have experienced discrimination or isolation because of their hearing loss.

History of Deaf-initely Women

The idea to set up Deaf-initely Women all started during a birthday meal. Ten deaf friends were celebrating being deaf women as well as discussing the problems that they encountered in their daily lives. They acknowledged how fortunate they were to have each other for emotional support which gave them so much strength in their daily lives. They began to realise that other deaf and hard of hearing women need this support too and started to create an organisation that could help.

Awards for All provided the funding for our “Connecting Deaf Women across Derbyshire” project. The numbers of deaf and hard of hearing women joining Deaf-initely Women from all parts of Derbyshire has increased. The idea has grown, bringing together deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women who may have felt isolated, to support each other.

Our Aims

Improve the wellbeing of deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women
We aim to improve the well-being of deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women through health education and raising awareness. We want deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women to become emotionally and financially strong and able to cope within their personal, working and family lives.

Challenge discrimination
We effectively challenge discrimination together and we support agencies to learn and improve the way they serve and employ deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women. We aim to empower women who have experienced discrimination due to hearing loss.

Build the confidence of deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women
Our aim is to improve the confidence of deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women through socialising and trying new experiences.

“Getting together helps us to grow in confidence and we gain support from each other.”
