About Deaf-initely Women
Deaf-initely Women brings deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women together.
Isolation can be life changing. Deaf-initely Women aims to empower deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women who have experienced discrimination or isolation because of their hearing loss.
History of Deaf-initely Women
The idea to set up Deaf-initely Women all started during a birthday meal. Ten deaf friends were celebrating being deaf women as well as discussing the problems that they encountered in their daily lives. They acknowledged how fortunate they were to have each other for emotional support which gave them strength in their daily lives. They realised that other deaf and hard of hearing women needed this support and established an organisation to help others.
Awards for All provided funding for our “Connecting Deaf Women across Derbyshire” project. We saw numerous deaf and hard of hearing women joining Deaf-initely Women from all parts of Derbyshire . This idea has grown, bringing together deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women thus improving social inclusion and reducing isolation.
