Inspiring Journeys for Deafblind Women: Janna

Dec 10, 2024

We’ve asked three remarkable deafblind women to share their journeys and insights about living with a Deafblind condition, as well as their hobbies and passions. Their stories are a true inspiration.

Janna’s Journey in Craft and Travel

Janna, a passionate crafter and traveller, began her journey into crafts in the 1990s. “I first got interested in crafts when I made Christmas cards,” she shares, recalling those early days of creativity. Over time, she explored new projects through craft shows and classes, continuously expanding her skills. Travel became another joy when she and her husband bought a small caravan, leading to numerous adventures across the UK. “The furthest we’ve travelled in our motorhome was to Scotland’s NC500. Our caravan feels like a home away from home,” she says with a smile.

Being Deafblind, Janna has encountered unique challenges on the road. “It can be hard to know what to do when travelling, so we plan our trips carefully, researching each place in advance,” she explains. This preparation helps Janna, and her husband make the most of each adventure.

Crafting and travelling have given Janna both independence and happiness.

They’re enjoyable and challenging,” she says. “I’ve grown more confident, especially as I’ve learned to fix mistakes with the help of my PA’s when my vision limits me.”

Her PA’s assist with sorting materials, reading instructions, and helping organise supplies, enabling Janna to focus on her creative skills.

When asked about advice for other Deafblind women pursuing their passions, Janna wholeheartedly encourages them, “Live your dreams and go for it—you can do it independently with support.”

We are thrilled that Janna will be selling her crafts at Let’s Celebrate Deaf Women’s Day next year. It’s her first time setting up a stall, and she’s looking forward to sharing her work and passions with others.
