Corvette Silo, from Derby, owns and manages a company, Kingswell Support Service Limited that provides Support Workers for Deaf people.
Originally, she studied textiles at university. Since graduating, in her mid 20’s, she went on to set up a business by setting up a shop, but she felt that something was missing. During the early days, she was asked to support a deaf-blind individual, which led her to set up a company to support two service users and employing three employees. She finally realised, at last, she had found her true passion. She loves making a positive difference in her customers’ lives. Fast forward seven years later, her company has expanded to over 20 service users and staff!
Corvette employs deaf staff and they support both deaf and hearing service users. Access To Work is really important for providing interpreters, so that they are on an equal footing with other companies, communicating with service users’ families and for staff whose first language is BSL.
The pandemic has certainly been a very challenging time. They have been restricted in how they can provide support and making sure their service users were safe and not isolated. In addition to providing support, due to the ongoing government announcements and guidelines, a lot of their service users were scared and confused about what was going on. So, they ensured that their service users understood fully what they had to do and what they were not allowed to do by finding ways to explain the information to make sure they were safe.
“However, through the pandemic, we have gone through a steep learning curve and our staff has rallied around to support each other. I believe we have come out stronger as we have streamlined our business and learned the importance of providing a high-quality service.”
Corvette’s advice to other deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing women is: Think about what you want to do, what’s your passion and your USP (unique selling point). Then, plan what you need to do first, e.g. Go on a course to learn new skills. Don’t be frightened of trying something new, start small and build up slowly. If I can do it, so can you!”
